Aojiru (drink)

Aojiru, known as “green juice” or “green drink” in English, is a Japanese vegetable beverage typically crafted from kale or young barley grass. Renowned for its nutritional value, it contains significant amounts of vitamins and minerals, although caution is advised for those undergoing specific treatments or taking certain medications. For instance, its high potassium, phosphorus, and vitamin A content may not be suitable for individuals undergoing dialysis, while the abundance of vitamin K might interfere with medication for circulatory issues.

Despite its health benefits, aojiru is infamous for its unpleasant taste, to the extent that it is commonly used as a penalty on Japanese TV game shows. However, newer versions of aojiru strive to minimize the bitter flavor associated with the original formulation.
